We all love Netflix, don’t we? All the new movies and series we watch are mostly Netflix shows.

But, who really is the brain behind this all? Is it an individual? A company? The government? Well, here are some facts you need to know about Netflix.

 

Background.

Netflix also known as Netflix, Inc. is an American subscription streaming service and Production Company. Initially the company was a rental business renting out DVDs via mail.

In 2007, it shifted to streaming. It is based in Los Gastos, California. It was founded in 1997 on August the 29th by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California.

Netflix offers a film and television series library through various distribution deals. It also has some of its original productions called Netflix originals.

It is also a major forerunner for diversity offering services in various languages. One of the founders, Hastings is a co CEO of the company together with Ted Sarandos.

Greg Peters is the Chief Operations Officer (COO) and the Chief Product Officer (CPO). The company makes over 30 billion US dollars a year in revenue.

Who Owns Netflix?

There is not one single owner of Netflix. Netflix, Inc. is a publicly traded company with so many shareholders. The levels of ownership vary depending on how much stock an institution or an individual owns.

Institutional investors hold the majority of Netflix’s shares at over 83% of the company. As for individual shareholders, Reed Hastings owns the largest which is 1% of the company.

The top three individual insider shareholders of Netflix are Leslie J Kilgore, David Hyman and Greg Peters and the top three institutional shareholders are Capital Research Global investors, Blackrock Inc. and Vanguard Group Inc.

Leslie Kilgore owns a total of 35,196 Netflix shares representing 0.02% of the company’s total shares outstanding.

She is also currently a non-executive member of the Netflix board of directors serving since January 2012.

She previously served as the company’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for 12 years. David Hyman owns a total of 31,610 Netflix shares representing 0.01% of the total shares outstanding.

He also serves as the company’s General Counsel and secretary since 2002 and is responsible for both legal affairs and public policy.

Greg Peters owns a total of 13,090 shares representing less than 0.01% of the company’s total shares outstanding.

He has served as the company’s Chief Product Officer (CPO) since 2017 from being the International development officer.

Capital Research Global investors owns 37.9 million shares of Netflix which amounts to 8.6% of the total shares outstanding.

Vanguard Group Inc. owns 34.1 million shares amounting to 7.8% of the total shares outstanding and Black rock Inc. owns 28.4 million shares representing 6.5% of the total shares outstanding.
