Tiktok has seen enormous growth over the last few years that it is one of the social media platforms of choice for US Marketers especially those targeting Gen Z (females at least).
And Data Driven Influencer Marketing is becoming even more important.
So many people are also starting to tap into the influencer marketing space with billions of blogs being created every day.
Influencers like Noah St. John, founder of SuccessClinic.com are typical examples of very successful online entrepreneurs that are making thousands of dollars from their online businesses while working from home.
This goes to show how life changing Influencer Marketing can be.
My Blogging Journey – How it All Started
I started my first blog back in 2018 when I had just joined College and unlike most of the bloggers I know, I didn’t start my blog for fun or as a leisure activity.
I actually wanted to make money online after reading the income reports of many popular bloggers that were reporting monthly revenues of over $10,000.
I can tell you that my very first blog was a terrible failure for lack of a better word.
And I believe this was the case because I wanted to enjoy the benefits of blogging without actually putting in the work.
I still remember purchasing my domain name from NameCheap and with the help of various YouTube videos I was able to set up my blog in under 10 minutes.
And like many people who prefer the lazy approach, I started scraping the internet for content and simply publishing articles from other people’s blogs.
This was not only ethically wrong but very counter productive.
Since this was clearly going to be a difficult task, I used a couple of plugins that scrap content from popular news sites using RSS feeds and then automatically publish them on your site.
I set up an automated news site that was taking content from different popular news sites and simply publishing them on my site.
In just 24 hours of my site being live I already had 1000 published articles. Interesting right? LOL..
After about two weeks I applied for Google AdSense so I could start making money blogging but I was rejected.
I believe you can already guess the reason my site was rejected for monetization by AdSense.
My site was rejected due to scraped content and lack of originality. This was a very frustrating experience for me and I remember making a few changes to the content on my site so it could appear unique but I was still denied monetization by Google AdSense.
In fact, I was rejected for Google AdSense three times in a row and each rejection email pointed out “Scraped Content “as the reason for the rejection.
I can tell you that those experiences taught me a lot about what it takes to actually create a money making blog.
After several failed attempts, I gave up on the whole blogging thing and decided to focus on my studies.
I had just enrolled into Engineering School (I am an Aeronautical Engineer by profession) and things had stated to get quite crazy for me as far as my studies were concerned.
I needed more time to study and prepare for my lectures and tests. So I shut down the blog.
It wasn’t long before I created my second blog and decided to do things differently since I had already learnt a lot from my previous blogging mistakes.
My second blog was what I would call a mini success. At the time I created it I had taken some awesome blogging courses.
Two were paid courses and the rest were free blogging courses.
The courses taught me everything I know about SEO, affiliate marketing and blogging.
I was able to implement all the strategies I learnt from these courses and within the first 6 months of starting my blog I was already making $150 per month from that small blog.
Much of the revenue from the blog was affiliate revenue as well as a small bit of Ad revenue from display Ads.
As I was getting ready to graduate college I made the decision to sell the blog and start a new one in a niche that I was more passionate about.
I used part of the money I made from the sale (It was a great sale and I enlisted the site as a starter site) to start this blog that you are reading now.
I currently make anywhere between $6000 to $10,000 per month with this small blog.
Now this didn’t happen overnight. I had to put in a lot of work and investment to reach this point.
Blogging is not a get rich scheme and like any other business it requires a lot of persistence and dedication if you want to succeed.
To cut the long story short I’d like to offer you a few tips and tricks on how you can create a successful blogging business.
I made several mistakes along the way and hopefully you can learn from my mistakes and do better.
3 Not So Obvious Lessons I Learned After Starting Several Failed Blogs and Finally Making A Successful Blog
1. Not doing keyword research
This is probably one of the worst mistakes I made as a newbie blogger. And it is one of the blogging mistakes I still see many new bloggers making.
I spent much of my blogging time writing about my struggles, passions and anything else I felt was worth writing about.
This is a very wrong approach to blogging and it is one that is bound to end in total failure.
Unless you are as famous as Ariana Grande or Justin Bieber, you should be writing about things people actually want to read and are actively looking for on search engines like Google.
No none cares about your recent heartbreak or how much you hate men…Trust me no single soul in the world cares…
Perhaps if you are a famous celebrity then maybe we would be interested in knowing how you slept last night or how you feel about the weather…
But if you are a normal person like many of us folks out here, then you are better off learning SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
SEO is basically the process of optimizing your content so that it can appear on Google when people search for particular keywords or terms.
And to be honest you don’t need to pay for an expensive SEO course just to learn SEO especially if you are a beginner.
There are lots of YouTube Videos and blogs online with free content that will literally help you attain a Masters Degree in SEO and Digital Marketing. (There is no such thing of course)
Some of my favorite YouTube channels that I recommend you check out include Income School and the Ahrefs YouTube Channel.
SEO is what helped me build my third blog (Making Sense Of Pennies) to thousands of visitors per month and now this small blog makes me over $6000 per month.
If you are serious about making money online with your blog, then you should invest time in doing keyword research and learning effective SEO strategies.
2. Spending A lot Of Money On Extras
This is another mistake I made when I started my first blog. I spent a lot of money on useless and unnecessary things that I thought I needed to be able to succeed.
I remember spending about $130 on a blog theme (It was a Genesis theme) and paying for various WordPress plugins just because some popular blogger said I needed them to succeed.
Now don’t get me wrong. Investing in your blog is not a bad thing.
If you do have the money then please go ahead and buy these softwares, WordPress themes and plugins.
But if you are just starting out and don’t have much money to throw around then I would recommend you spend more of your time writing content and not just buying various extras and unnecessary things.
For instance, when you get web hosting for your blog, the hosting company may try selling various extras to you like security per month among many other things.
The truth is you don’t need all of these to see success with your blog.
For example I don’t see why you should invest so much money on buying a WordPress theme if you can get a free one from WordPress.
Unless you are having a decent amount of money saved up before you start your blog, I would recommend you limit your spending on unnecessary things.
In my opinion the following are the most important expenses for a newbie blogger.
a) Domain Name (You can get it for $8 on NameCheap or even $1 for your first year on Godaddy)
b) Blog Hosting (You can get blog hosting for about $2 to $3 per month with platforms like Bluehost)
c) Content Production (In case you are not writing the content yourself)
3. Giving Up So Fast.
This is the major reason some bloggers get to make thousands of dollars with their blogs while others struggle to even make a single dime.
If you are serious about making money blogging then you ought to be ready to be in it for the long haul.
The truth is success is not going to happen overnight.
You will have to put in the work if you want to make a living off your blog. Don’t give up after a few months because you are not seeing traffic or making any money with your blog.
It usually takes about 6 to 8 months for a new blog to start to gain traction from Google.
Unless you are going to focus on Pinterest and leverage it to get faster results then you will have to wait for a while before Google starts showing your blog some love.
Just focus on creating unique, helpful and quality content. The traffic will eventually grow and so will the income.
Everyone has a different timeline so don’t compare yourself to other bloggers.
Simply trust the process. Create quality content and keep publishing consistently. You will thank me later.
Just like anything worthwhile in life, blogging takes time but all I can promise you is that it will be worthwhile if you stay the course and keep creating helpful and engaging content.
The first 6 months will be the hardest since you will not be making much from your blog and the traffic will be really low.
I still recall days when I would have 0 visitors to my blog, yes you read that right.
I seemed as though I was the only one reading my articles.
But now I average 1000 to 1500 daily visits to my website. And I am still working on getting better at this business each day.
So don’t give up. Keep writing and most importantly keep publishing!
